Meet the Member - The Brickyard Collaborative
The core mission of The Brickyard Collaborative, Inc. is to create a sustainable MakerSpace in Lynn community, with two additional facets – an entrepreneurship support network of shared business facilities, mentorship and resources, as well as facilities that augment the several academic STEAM programs in the area.
Tell us a bit about you and what you do? This could be your mission statement but we (and interested consumers) would love to hear about what you do in your words!
The Brickyard Collaborative serves primarily the city of Lynn and surrounding communities of Saugus, Nahant, Swampscott, Peabody, Danvers, Salem, Marblehead and Beverly. We have a key focus on serving middle- to low-income populations, including students, un- and under-employed and retired workers, artisans, craftspeople and creators.
Through providing key tools, systems and processes available through membership as well as offering training, workshops and classes available to the general public, directly in response to community needs and interests; leveraging other partners in the community and collaboration across all age, gender, background and other traditional boundaries, and forming a focus of many areas of activity and interests in the city, The Brickyard Collaborative strives to build Lynn as a center of innovative thought, work, and economic strength for the North Shore and beyond.
The Brickyard Collaborative has a clear focus on renewable and clean energy, sustainable resources, as well as responsible recycling, re-use, re-purposing and upcycling of raw and waste materials through cooperation with the Mass DEP.
Largely maintained by volunteers, with a core of experienced staff, the spirit of collaboration and cooperation extends well into the structure of the company. Many MakerSpaces, in particular, our “sister” space in Derry, Northern Ireland (the “sister city” of Lynn), have served to bridge painful divides in the community, and help rebuild shattered economies and social relations. Lynn is a profoundly diverse community, and it’s our goal to help accomplish goals achieved by our friends in Ireland.
The Brickyard Collaborative is founded on a philosophy based on the power of cooperation, collaboration, a positive and supportive community of diverse, yet like-minded creators, builders, designers, entrepreneurs and students of any age.
What part of your job would you consider creative, and why do you enjoy that part of what you do?
I like designing, building, repairing and re-purposing things. Currently, I've been working on converting gas motorcycles to electric and designing robotic easels for photographing paintings.
I also enjoy building teams and communities of builders, makers, artists and providing facilities to see what people make of them... making the makerspace!
How does your creative work contribute to the growth and stability of the Creative Economy? If this isn't applicable: Why do you feel a healthy creative economy is important to a successful community?
Makerspaces, STEAM programs, and business incubators have decades' long track records of creating local economies both creative and tech, strengthening skills in a community, and sparking innovative solutions to community challenges.
What’s your favorite part of running/managing a local business?
My favorite part, personally, is seeing the spark of inspiration and excitement in someone as they realize what they can create, build, imagine, with new technology and traditional methods, in a collaborative environment.
It has also been completely empowering and inspiring to see the amount of excitement and backing for The Brickyard Collaborative, both in Lynn, and the entire North Shore - all the way up to Gloucester and Amesbury.
What’s the one thing people would be surprised to learn about you or your business?
I've written four books, including a book called Power in Flux: The History of Electric Motorcycles, and, speaking of books, we're going to have a full Maker's Library in The Brickyard Collaborative
