Meet the Member: Survival By Design
Jennifer Adler, Survival By Design (graphic design and creative communications) and Survival By Design Cards (sassy and clever greeting cards and stationery products)
Tell us a bit about you and what you do?
Survival By Design offers creative strategy and graphic design for nonprofits and businesses near and far. Clients have described Jennifer Adler as quick, flexible, patient, pleasant to work with, thoughtful, reliable, proactive, and a great member of the team. (She would agree. Ha!) Jennifer is a creative problem solver who loves spending her days working on projects for organizations who are looking to get a whole communications team worth of services from one person (and her network of creative colleagues). Survival By Design was launched in Providence, RI in 2008 and moved to Central Square, Lynn, MA in 2012. (For a laugh, have a look at Jennifer's boutique line of clever and sassy greeting cards, Survival By Design Cards.)
What part of your job would you consider creative, and why do you enjoy that part of what you do?
All of my work is a "creative collaboration". Whether I'm designing event collateral for clients in Dallas or producing a promotional video for the Downtown Lynn Cultural District, it's all wonderfully creative. I'm lucky to get to do what I love for a living!
How does your creative work contribute to the growth and stability of the Creative Economy?
I love working with other creatives on projects! When I can work with another creative professional who has expertise that adds to what I can offer, we bring each other up.
What’s your favorite part of running/managing a local business?
It is so exciting to see my work "out in the wild". Whether it is my banners hanging throughout Downtown Lynn, or posters in storefront windows for the Salem Jazz & Soul Festival, or the map postcards I designed for the Downtown Lynn Cultural District ready to be taken in local coffee shops, it feels great to be part of the visual fabric of the North Shore.
What’s the one thing people would be surprised to learn about you our your business?
I actually am an excellent writer and editor of marketing copy. My job doesn't stop with just graphic design. I have a BA in Philosophy from Brandeis University and a Professional Certificate in Advertising & Print Design from Rhode Island School of Design so I look at projects from a multifaceted perspective and have lots to offer my clients.
